Celebrating Science

05/2012

On Wednesday, May 23, Coriell Institute brought together many of our region's healthcare, governmental, and business leaders to celebrate the success of the Coriell Personalized Medicine Collaborative research study.

Opening the evening at the Union League of Philadelphia, Dr. Michael Christman and Dr. Howard McLeod presented an enjoyable and well-received lecture about the incredible advancements that have been made in genetic research, and how they are offering new understandings of disease progression and new avenues for better health outcomes. Dr. Christman described the CPMC study which was launched in 2007 to understand the usefulness of genetics in health management and clinical decision-making.

Following the lecture, attendees were welcomed to enroll in the CPMC research study. The interest in the study was tremendous, with almost 100 people joining the progressive and acclaimed study. The CPMC Education and Enrollment event was sponsored by Archer & Greiner and Atlantic Trailer Leasing.

Afterwards guests perused the many silent auction items that ran the gamut: From watching the Phillies from a luxury box to La bohème from box seats. A very popular prize was an evening of bowling with Congressman Jon Runyan at the exquisite Moorestown home of Drs. Calvin and Orsula Knowlton.

Dr. Christman took to the podium once again to present Coriell awards to three honorees, recognizing the instrumental roles they have played in integrating personalized medicine into routine clinical care. In a note to attendees, Dr. Christman described Dr. Howard McLeod, Ms. Linda Rohrer, and Mr. Peter Driscoll as, "exceptional models of how innovative, entrepreneurial, and keen thinking can transform novel ideas into tools that are improving human lives today."

Dr. McLeod received the Coriell Scientific Award for his achievements in advancing genomics in medicine. The Scientific Award was sponsored by Cooper University Hospital and IBM.

The Coriell Humanitarian Award was presented to Ms. Linda Rohrer in celebration and recognition of her generosity to the Coriell Institute and South Jersey. In her remarks, she fondly recalled her father, Mr. William Rohrer, who instilled in her a genuine dedication to our region. The Humanitarian Award was sponsored by Virtua and Mr. Manning and Mrs. Ginny Smith.

Long-time Coriell Trustee, Mr. Peter Driscoll was awarded with the Ambassador Award. Serving as Coriell's Chairman from 2004 to 2011, Mr. Driscoll is indeed a tireless ambassador for Coriell and was duly recognized by Dr. Christman and current Board Chairman, Mr. Bob Kiep, for his commitment. The Ambassador Award was sponsored by Thomas Scientific and Mr. Joseph Holman.

Dr. Christman thanked the many sponsors of the evening, including corporate sponsors Glenmede, CareKinesis, FreedomPay, ASL Transportation, Coriell Board member, Mr. Jerry Johnson and his wife and Mrs. Raye Johnson, and McCausland, Keen, Buckman. Along with the many program and silent auction sponsors – they are gratefully recognized below – Coriell is thankful for their support in making What's In Your Genes? a wonderful success. More importantly, their support demonstrates a commitment to advancing genetic research that is changing how we are prescribed medications and how we understand and treat disease.
