Repository NIA Aging Cell Culture Repository
Subcollection Animals
Biopsy Source Aorta, thoracic
Cell Type Smooth muscle
Tissue Type Artery
Transformant Untransformed
Sample Source Smooth muscle from Aorta, thoracic
Ethnicity YORKSHIRE
Relation to Proband proband
Confirmation Clinical summary/Case history
ISCN 38,XX
Species Sus scrofa
Common Name pig
Remarks Yorkshire breed. The thoracic aorta was removed immediately post-mortem on 10/21/91. Strips of the medial layer were removed, minced, and used as explants to initiate the culture. Cell morphology is fibroblast-like. The karyotype is 38,XX with 6% of the cells examined showing random chromosome loss. The culture tested positive for alpha-smooth muscle actin and negative for the endothelial cell-specific von Willebrand factor (immunofluorescence assays). Culture medium: HF12 15U. The HF12 medium used should be endotoxin-free. For lifespan determination this cell line was cultured on gelatin-coated flasks. Culture grows slowly. The legacy karyotype description shown in this Remark may not be representative of the current available product.
