Biopsy Source Aorta, thoracic
Cell Type Smooth muscle
Tissue Type Artery
Transformant Untransformed
Sample Source Smooth muscle from Aorta, thoracic
Family Member 1
Relation to Proband proband
Confirmation Clinical summary/Case history
ISCN 64,XY
Species Equus caballus
Common Name horse
Remarks Standardbred horse. The thoracic aorta was removed immediately post-mortem on 12/7/84. Strips of the medial layer were minced, treated with collagenase and then elastase. Cells released by this treatment were used for the primary culture. Cell morphology is fibroblast-like and the cells form layered sheets at post-confluence. The karyotype is 64,XY; normal diploid male. The culture tested positive for alpha-smooth muscle actin and negative for the endothelial cell-specific von Willebrand factor (immunofluorescence assays). For lifespan determination this cell line was cultured in Ham's F12 medium and MCDB104 medium in a 1/1 mixture with 10% inactivated fetal bovine serum and supplements (0.04-0.06mg/ml crude ECGF and 0.05mg/ml heparin). A skin fibroblast culture from this horse is AG07984. The legacy karyotype description shown in this Remark may not be representative of the current available product.
