Coriell’s Biobank and Cell Culture Laboratory have established the gold standard in the cryopreservation of biomaterials and the capacity to support varied research worldwide. The diverse collections of biological specimens managed by Coriell offer the scientific community the highest quality specimens, which are necessary for successful research endeavors. Since the first repository – a National Institutes of Health collection – was established at Coriell in 1964, millions of cell lines and DNA samples have been distributed to researchers in 66 countries; more than 7,000 peer-reviewed papers have been published citing over 12,000 biospecimens from the Coriell Biobank.
The service offerings through the Coriell Cytogenetics Laboratory combine conventional and molecular cytogenetic analyses, such as G-banded karyotyping and FISH analysis, with modern cytogenomic technologies capable of capturing chromosome rearrangements at a very high resolution. This genomic service is performed in Coriell’s Genotyping and Microarray Center – one of the nation’s highest-throughput facilities, with systems from Affymetrix and Illumina, and CLIA certification and licensure. If your samples require DNA or RNA isolation before genotyping, Coriell’s Molecular Biology Laboratory can perform this service. Coriell also offers research study design and expertise to support data interpretation and other study requirements.
The Coriell Stem Cell Biobank is committed to providing scientists with the opportunity to bank their pluripotent stem cell lines at the Stem Cell Biobank (SCB), and to develop in-house human induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cell lines for distribution for researchers. The services offered by the SCB includes characterization of iPS cell lines and mouse embryonic stem cell (mESC) lines, such as embryoid body formation, germ-layer specific gene expression, surface antigen testing, and in vitro differentiation.
All services are performed under strict quality systems, including ISO 9001:2008. Throughout the history of the Coriell Institute for Medical Research, the Institute has sought to achieve the highest standards of performance and safety. To this end, the Institute has an Emergency Operations Plans, Exposure Control Policy, and Laboratory Safety Plan. In addition, each department has its own quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA) procedures. As an experienced manager of biobanks, Coriell has in place systems for detecting and resolving any emerging problems associated with QC. A comprehensive QA/QC program is in place to regulate activities and provide early identification and resolutions.
