An overview of the CPMC research study is included below. For additional information about this initiative, please click here to visit the CPMC web portal.
The Coriell Personalized Medicine Collaborative® (CPMC®) is a longitudinal research study designed to determine the utility of using personal genome information in health management and clinical decision-making. The CPMC® also aims to discover presently unknown gene variants that elevate one’s risk of complex disease and affect one’s response to medications.
This forward-looking, collaborative effort – involving volunteer study participants, physicians, scientists, ethicists, genetic counselors and information technology experts – seeks to ultimately enroll 100,000 participants to maximize the power of the research study. Coriell Institute for Medical Research is committed to ensuring that the population of CPMC® study participants is demographically representative as historically, the presence of minority populations in medical research studies has been minimal.
The CPMC® aims to be a model for the ethical, legal and responsible implementation of genome-informed personalized medicine and is structured to allow dynamic communication between Coriell and study participants using a secure web portal. Through the portal, participants have access to personalized risk results for genetic variants that are deemed potentially “actionable” (i.e. having a medical or lifestyle intervention shown to improve care, facilitate earlier detection, etc.). The web portal also gives participants the option to share all or portions of their results with their physician(s), as well as the ability to schedule an appointment with a genetic counselor at no cost to discuss CPMC® results, if they so choose.
Educational forums are hosted for participants and their physicians about personalized medicine and the specific conditions reported by the CPMC®. Additionally, periodic web-based surveys are used to assess health and behavioral outcomes related to the return of personal genome information through the CPMC® study.
There is no charge for individuals participating in this study. The CPMC® is currently funded through philanthropic donations, foundation grants and institutional support.
To enroll in the CPMC®, individuals must:
- Attend an informed consent session
- Be 18 years of age or older
- Have a valid email address
- Be willing to provide a saliva sample for genetic testing
- Be willing to complete online health questionnaires and periodic follow-up surveys
