The Coriell Auxiliary was born in September, 1963, when fourteen women met to form the Suburban Auxiliary to the South Jersey Medical Research Foundation (now Coriell Institute for Medical Research). They had been invited to organize by Lewis L. Coriell, M.D., Ph.D., founder of the research facility to help wage the war against cancer. Armed with determination and imagination, the group began raising money for cancer research and publicizing the Institute's scientific work, much of which targeted various cancers.
Surviving founders Kitty Middleton and Gerda Ballinger live in Medford Lakes and Mount Laurel, NJ, respectively. Through the years, their organization has grown to several dozen members from Southern New Jersey and Pennsylvania, many of whom serve as Coriell scientists and staff.
Projects are designed to inform South Jersey residents of the Institute's contributions to scientific discoveries and to create and produce fundraisers to benefit the Institute's research on molecular genetics, cancer, diseases of the aged and infectious diseases. Coriell Auxilians stand among the most visible, tireless volunteers at Institute-sponsored events.
The Coriell Auxiliary's vibrant year-round activities coalesce a wide range of individuals, corporations, and other agencies in support of the Institute. The most outstanding, the annual Coriell Auxiliary Golf Classic, was created by President Doris Barlow of Moorestown, NJ. President Barlow brainstormed such successful Auxiliary "classics" as a Spring Frolic, an Attic Treasure Sale, and Plant Sale.
