ImageLorraine H. Toji, Ph.D. is Associate Professor and Director of the Nucleic Acids Group where she oversees the isolation and molecular characterization of DNA samples in the Coriell Cell Repositories.

Dr. Toji's laboratory supplies the scientific community with the very highest quality DNA for research on understanding the human genome. In cooperation with the Institute's Molecular Biology Group this laboratory is responsible for quality control studies confirming the identities of cell cultures and DNA:

  • including molecular characterization of somatic cell hybrids by PCR with markers specifically mapped to particular portions of individual chromosomes
  • confirmation of identity of samples and family relationships by genotyping with fluorescently tagged primers for 6 microsatellite loci.

During the past ten years, the Coriell Institute has distributed nearly 250,000 DNA samples worldwide and currently stores over 900,000 samples of DNA. By supplying high quality biomaterials to the leaders in the field of human genetics, Coriell truly facilitates edge research.

Trained as a nucleic acids biochemist, Dr. Toji completed a master's degree at Wayne State University. After teaching college chemistry for three years, she returned to graduate school at Stanford University, and then transferred to and completed her Ph.D. at the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School.
